Best Ski Resorts Near PSU

Tussey Mountain is the closest ski resort to State College/PSU! A quick 9 minute drive from campus, Tussey’s season passes might be worth checking out for an avid skier during the colder seasons.

1. Tussey Mountain Ski Resort

Distance from Penn State University: 6.5 miles, 9-minute drive

Tussey Mountain is the closest ski resort to State College/PSU! A quick 9 minute drive from campus, Tussey’s season passes might be worth checking out for an avid skier during the colder seasons. With a small ski area and a quad chairlift, T-bar and short double chairlifts are also available for beginners. Tussey’s facilities include seven runs on a 500-foot vertical with just under 40 acres.

They offer lessons and programs with opening seasons depending on conditions that exist for snowmaking, usually in Late December. Tussey Mountain’s winter program season officially begins after January 1st.

2. Blue Knob All Seasons Resort

Distance from Penn State University: 65.4 miles, 1 hour and 8 minute drive

Whilst the mountains are not especially big at Blue Knob, it has the highest skiing in Pennsylvania with some of the most challenging terrains. There are four lifts for skiers, and offers a beginner slope near the top of the area. Blue Knob’s harder runs include a double black diamond paired with two long double chairlifts.

Aside from just skiing, Blue Knob offers golf, event planning, and even hosts weddings! They hosted a Breakfast with Santa event on Saturday December the 17th from 9am to 11:30am, and consistently host fun seasonal events. With special group rates and discounts, Blue Knob even offers tubing at the highest skiable mountain in PA.

3. Roundtop Mountain Resort

Distance from Penn State University: 108 miles, 1 hour and 52 minute drive

Roundtop is considered a relatively smaller ski area located to the south of Harrisburg. There are five chairlifts offered, a tow, and three magic carpets. Roundtop’s terrain includes 21 runs over a vertical of 600 feet. Roundtop serves up one of the most challenging slopes available, with one triple chairlift and another quadruple chairlift.

Roundtop’s rentals are available to be reserved online! They also offer $5 off the walk-up rate through online bookings and rentals. Roundtop offers ski and ride lessons and is strongly driven by their EpicPromise to protect the environment and the future of winter sports. They donated $19.4 million to community partners last year and are advancing towards operating at net-zero by 2030!
